Cracked Tooth or Broken Filling: What to Do Before Your Visit

A cracked tooth, a chipped tooth, and a broken or lost filling are not always the same problem. A chip usually means part of the tooth surface broke off. A cracked tooth may have a fracture line that is hard to see. A broken or lost filling leaves part of the tooth exposed. Until you are seen, the goal is to protect the tooth, keep it clean, and watch for signs that the visit should be urgent.

What to do right away

  • Rinse gently with warm salt water if it feels comfortable. This can help clean the area without scrubbing it.
  • Use a cold compress on the cheek if there is swelling or discomfort.
  • Avoid chewing on that side until the tooth is checked.
  • Choose soft foods such as yogurt, eggs, soup, pasta, or mashed foods.
  • Stay away from sticky, hard, crunchy, very hot, or very cold foods if they trigger pain or sensitivity.
  • Keep the area clean by brushing carefully around the tooth and flossing gently if the space allows it.

What not to do

Do not put aspirin directly on the tooth or gum. Do not use superglue, household adhesive, or other rough do-it-yourself repair methods. Those can irritate the tissues and make later treatment harder. Temporary over-the-counter dental repair products may be a short-term bridge, but they are not a .

When the appointment should be urgent

Call for prompt dental care if you have significant pain, sensitivity that is getting worse, swelling, fever, a bad taste or drainage, a tooth that feels loose, or a tooth injury after trauma to the jaw or face. A chipped or fractured tooth can still need prompt assessment even if it is not completely broken off.

Seek emergency medical help right away if you have trouble breathing, trouble swallowing, facial swelling that is rapidly getting worse, or you suspect a jaw fracture.

What the dentist may check

At the visit, the dentist will look at the tooth, the filling, your bite, and the surrounding tissues. The repair plan depends on what is found. In some cases the tooth may only need smoothing or a new filling. In others, a crown or another repair may be recommended. The exam helps show whether the tooth structure is stable enough to fix and what option makes the most sense.
