WHAT TO EXPECT
What to expect with Invisalign clear aligners.
01
How clear aligners work
Invisalign uses a planned series of removable aligners to apply controlled pressure to selected teeth. Small tooth-coloured attachments or other auxiliaries may be needed to produce particular movements.
Aligners can be removed for meals and cleaning, but they must be worn consistently for the prescribed number of hours to follow the treatment plan.
02
Your examination and digital plan
Before treatment, the dentist evaluates tooth position, the bite, gum health, existing dental work and the amount and direction of movement required. Digital scans, photographs and radiographs may be used to prepare and review the proposed plan.
03
Wearing your aligners and checking progress
Each aligner is worn for the interval prescribed by the dentist. Review visits check fit, movement, oral health and whether refinements are needed. Teeth and aligners should be cleaned before the trays are replaced after eating.
04
Keeping your result with retainers
Teeth can shift after active treatment. Retainers are therefore part of the treatment plan, not an optional extra. The dentist will explain when and how long they should be worn and how they should be replaced or monitored.
COMMON QUESTIONS
Clear aligner questions
Find answers about aligner wear, treatment timing, attachments, retainers and daily care.
Who may be suitable for Invisalign clear aligners?
Suitability depends on tooth position, bite, gum health, growth, restorations and the movements required. Digital records and an examination are needed.
How many hours a day are aligners worn?
Aligners generally need to be worn most of the day and night, except for eating, drinking certain beverages and cleaning. Follow the schedule provided for your plan.
Can I eat while wearing the aligners?
Aligners are normally removed for meals and snacks. Teeth should be cleaned before the trays are replaced to reduce staining and cavity risk.
How long does clear aligner treatment take?
Treatment length varies with the amount and type of movement, wear consistency and whether refinements are needed.
What are attachments and elastics?
Small tooth-coloured attachments or elastics may be used to help the aligners produce particular movements. Their need is determined during planning.
Will I need retainers after treatment?
Yes. Retainers help maintain the new tooth positions. The dentist will explain the type, wear schedule and replacement needs.
Will clear aligners affect my speech?
A temporary change in speech can occur while the tongue adapts. It usually improves with consistent wear and practice.
What should I do if I lose an aligner?
Contact the office or orthodontic provider for instructions. Do not automatically skip ahead, because the next aligner may not fit as intended.
Can cavities or gum treatment be managed during aligner treatment?
Yes, but active problems may change the schedule. Good cleaning and regular dental care are important throughout treatment.
