X-rays may be needed, and your dentist may also check gum pockets to see whether there is inflammation or loss of support.

Crowns and fillings do not automatically rule out aligners. They can affect treatment planning, including where attachments can be placed and how teeth are monitored during treatment. Some restorative materials may also make attachment bonding less predictable, so the plan may need to be customized.

Why gum recession matters before tooth movement

Gum recession is not the same thing as active gum disease, but it is still worth assessing before starting orthodontic movement. If the gums are inflamed, bleeding, or losing support, moving teeth before things are stabilized can make the situation harder to manage. A prevention-first plan may mean improving brushing and flossing, getting a cleaning, or treating gum disease first, then reassessing whether aligners are a good fit.

That does not mean every case with mild recession is off the table. It means the key question is not only whether teeth can move, but whether the gums and bone around them are healthy enough to tolerate that movement.

When Invisalign may still be a good fit

Many patients with crowns, fillings, or mild recession can still be candidates after an exam. Sometimes Invisalign is the main treatment. Other times, care needs to be staged: stabilize the gums and oral hygiene first, then decide on tooth movement. In some bite problems, braces or another orthodontic approach may be the better choice.

Recent reviews suggest that differences between clear aligners and fixed braces for gum-related outcomes are modest and case-dependent, not the same for every patient. That is why the best plan depends on your teeth, gums, and treatment goals.
