If your family is planning dental care under the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP), a quick call before booking can help prevent billing surprises. CDCP is not the same as private dental insurance, and participation is not automatic at every office.

1) Am I eligible, and is my coverage active?

Ask whether each family member meets the current CDCP rules: Canadian residency for tax purposes, the required tax return(s) filed, no access to dental insurance through work, a pension, or a private plan, and adjusted family net income within CDCP limits. Also confirm that coverage is active for the date of the appointment.

2) Does this office accept CDCP patients and bill Sun Life directly?

Provider participation is voluntary. Ask whether the office participates in CDCP and whether it bills Sun Life directly for covered services.

3) Which services are covered, and do any need preauthorization?

Ask which parts of the planned visit are covered and whether any treatment needs preauthorization before it starts. Preauthorization is only needed for some services, not all.

4) Could I still owe a co-payment or extra charge?

Depending on income, some people have a co-payment and others do not. Extra charges can also apply for services that are not covered or when a provider’s fee is higher than the CDCP amount. Ask for an estimate before you agree to treatment.

5) What should I bring or confirm before the appointment?

Have your CDCP details ready, confirm the benefit start date or active status, and ask for a written estimate if treatment is planned. If more than one family member is coming in, list who is being seen and what each person needs checked.
