What to ask before you book

Start with a few simple questions:

• Can the office review my private insurance or CDCP details before the visit?
• Do I need to bring an insurance card, plan number, or any program letter?
• If I have more than one plan, which one is billed first, and how do they coordinate?
• Will I need an exam or x-rays before I can get a more accurate estimate?

If you are not sure what you have, it is better to ask first than to assume coverage later.

Why a written estimate helps, but does not lock in the final bill

A written fee estimate or treatment estimate can be very helpful because it shows the likely services and charges before treatment starts. But it is still an estimate, not a guarantee of the final out-of-pocket cost.

The amount you pay can change if the exam shows something unexpected, if x-rays are needed, or if your plan has deductibles, annual maximums, frequency limits, or other coverage rules.

Predetermination in plain language

Predetermination, sometimes called preauthorization, means the dental office sends the proposed treatment to your plan before treatment begins so the insurer can review it. This can be especially useful for larger or multi-step treatment plans.

It can help you understand what your plan may pay and what you may still owe, but it does not guarantee payment.

CDCP and other public programs

The Canadian Dental Care Plan has official eligibility rules. One key rule is that you must not have access to private dental coverage. Other factors include tax filing, Canadian residency, and income thresholds.

Do not assume you qualify based on age, income, or living in Hamilton alone. Check the official rules and your enrollment status first.

For some children and youth, Ontario’s Healthy Smiles Ontario program may also apply if they qualify. If a family has more than one program, ask the office how coverage may coordinate, but confirm the final rules with the program itself.

What to bring when you call

• Your insurance card or plan number

• Any public-program approval or benefit letter
• The names of family members on the plan
• A short list of questions about fees, coverage, and timing

What you can try at home for a few days

Keep brushing twice a day and clean between the teeth once a day. Be gentle, but do not stop cleaning the area just because it bleeds a little. Skipping the area can leave plaque in place and keep the gums irritated.

If you are not sure about your technique, ask your dentist or hygienist to show you a routine that fits your mouth.

Signs that should prompt a dental visit

• Bleeding keeps coming back or does not settle
• Gums look red, puffy, or tender
• Bad breath seems persistent, even after cleaning
• Gums seem to be receding
• Teeth feel loose or shifted
• You have pain when chewing

These signs do not prove gum disease, but they do mean the gums should be checked.

What the dentist may check

A dental exam can look for gingivitis, periodontitis, plaque or tartar below the gumline, and cleaning habits that may be missing harder-to-reach areas. Gingivitis is early gum inflammation. Periodontitis is a more advanced form of gum disease that can affect the tissues supporting the teeth. Symptoms alone cannot tell the full story, so an exam matters.
