What the dental team may look for

A careful exam may include gum pocket measurements, a check for bleeding around the teeth, and x-rays if needed. The goal is to see whether the problem is from plaque buildup and gum inflammation, whether there are deeper pocket areas, and whether the bone around the teeth has changed. The team may also look for dry mouth and signs of thrush, because both can make symptoms worse and can change what advice is most useful.

It also helps to bring your diabetes or prediabetes history, a list of medications, and any recent A1C number you know. That gives your dentist a clearer picture of your risk and helps them decide how often to monitor your gums.

Why this matters

Recent review evidence suggests a two-way association between diabetes and periodontitis. In plain language, people with diabetes may be more likely to have gum disease, and gum inflammation may be part of a broader health picture. But the evidence does not support saying that periodontal treatment will control blood sugar or replace medical diabetes care.

If the exam shows periodontitis, your dentist can talk through next steps and whether periodontal treatment makes sense for your situation.

If bleeding, swelling, bad breath, dry mouth, white patches, a bad taste, or loose teeth are ongoing or getting worse, book an exam rather than waiting for the next routine cleaning.
